Trinity Diversity Connection will be hosting the annual “Taste of Diversity” event in April, and other student organizations were called upon to contribute at a meeting on Thursday.
Representatives of the Trinity University Sponsored Organizations gathered at the meeting to give updates on their organizations and discuss future events.
Kezia Nyarko, a sophomore majoring in African Studies and French and president of Trinity Diversity Connection, announced that Taste of Diversity will take place in April on the Esplanade. Different cultural groups and organizations on campus will bring foods representing their respective cultures. The event is free and open to all students.
“This is an event in which we can promote cultural diversity through a language that everyone can relate with: food,” said Nyarko. She also shared her hopes that students would not just get a plate of food and walk away, but would stay to meet and chat with representatives of various organizations.
Nyarko recently sent an email to leaders of numerous groups on campus, encouraging them to participate in the event. The email expressed Trinity Diversity Connection’s intention to “bring all of the cultural organizations, departments, and greeks together to promote diversity.”
Trinity Diversity Connection will also pay for all the food. In the past, they have spent about $200 on food for each participating group. Nyarko told organization leaders at the meeting that her organization would be giving each group money, and on the day of the event, the organizations will be responsible for bringing the food.
“I'm really excited about it! I know that a few of the cultural organizations have been wanting to showcase the food of their respective cultures, and I think this event will allow them to join forces while also celebrating what makes each region/culture distinct and special,” said Rachel Daniel, a junior majoring in Spanish and Accounting and the vice president of Trinity’s Student Government Association. “As a student, I can't wait to enjoy some authentic, free food!”
Students are invited to join Trinity Diversity Connection on April 13th on the Esplanade at 2:30 p.m. The event will last for about two hours or until food runs out.
