Trinity Rugby: Stepping Up the Game
By Samuel King
The sun began to peek out of the clouds as the president and captain of the Trinity Rugby Club, Dayton Ames, set up the field in preparation for an entire day worth of games.
“I was very anxious for the whole event,” said Ames, a junior at Trinity. “I was excited for the opportunity to represent Trinity University, but we have never played in a tournament with stakes so high before.”
This was Saturday, April 28, when Trinity University Rugby hosted the Lone Star Conference 7’s tournament. Ten collegiate rugby teams from round Texas competed at the Wheatley Sports Complex on the east side of San Antonio for the conference champion through a round robin tournament. San Antonio Rugby Club sponsored the event.

Seizing the Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity: Trinity Students' Involvement in the NCAA Final Four
By Lauren Bagg
Trinity student Amanda Gerlach, a sophomore communication and Spanish double major with a sport management minor, was an ambassador for Westwood One Radio Row during the NCAA Final Four, held in San Antonio earlier this month. Her job was taking past and current coaches, players and other people involved with college basketball for interviews at different radio stations.
Gerlach saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because she was able to “spend time talking with them too, which was really nice!” she said. “I even got a picture with Bill Walton.”

Trinity University’s brand new rugby team played their very first game on Saturday in the Rugby 7’s Tournament.
A total of five teams competed, with Trinity placing in 4th, marking a strong start for the team, established just eight months ago.
The team started when a group of friends passed the rugby ball to one another after class. The group got bigger, and they decided to start recruiting others and register with the school.

Trinity Men’s Basketball Clicking after Rough Seasons

At the end of the 2016-2017 regular season, which ended last week, Trinity men’s basketball team achieved a record of 12-13. This was a great improvement from last year’s record of 10-16, and much better than their 2014-2015 season record of 5-20.
The story of the team overcoming adversities and becoming, once again, a winning team, can be seen as a prime example of how a team can face challenges and still find a way to positive team chemistry and victories.
After two straight losing seasons (2014 through 2016) and the struggle to end the win drought, the team faced a lot of adversity. This was a new situation for a team that not long ago had won three straight conference championships. They learned to maintain a positive attitude amid negativity. They learned to have patience, trust the process, and work their way to improve every year, until their 12-13 season this year. Read more »

Trinity Women’s Basketball Defeated Texas Lutheran University to Reach 20-1 Record

Trinity students from all over campus were packed like sardines in the student section of Webster Gym at 4 p.m. on Saturday to watch the Trinity women’s basketball team play their rival, Texas Lutheran University (TLU). With a 19-1 record, the women looked calm and ready to play the only team to which they have lost this season.
“It’s funny,” said coach Cameron Hill ‘99, 40, about the packed stands. “Trinity students don’t typically come to our games, and we really appreciate having them.”
Hill also had some advice for the new fans. “When the other team’s at the foul line, they need to make noise. That’s how you participate as a fan. But I’m very satisfied with them showing up, so we’ll take baby steps. But next step, make noise.”

Trinity University men’s lacrosse teamis both old and new.
It is old because it first started in 1988 when a bunch of “rag-tag” guys came together with a passion and dream of starting a lacrosse team. The boys wore jerseys and pads donated by the Trinity football team and they played their first scrimmage against the University of Texas.
In 1993, Trinity played the University of Texas in the first sanctioned United States intercollegiate lacrosse association game. The lacrosse team continued playing and growing until the spring of 2005, when it stopped playing and the team fell apart.
The current lacrosse team at Trinity, however, is barely 1 year old. The spark was kindled in June 2015, when Trinity student Ben Mulford had a vision to restart the team and the passion to make it great. Mulford double majors in Chinese and political science and just finished his third year at Trinity. Read more »

Trinity Baseball Loses Home Game
Trinity celebrates a home run during Friday's game Photos by Sara McCarty |
Trinity’s baseball team suffered a 4-8 loss to Texas Lutheran University (TLU) during a home game on Friday, losing their second conference game in a row after last week’s upset by Schreiner University.
TLU got momentum early in the game, scoring three runs in the first inning. Trinity was out hit by TLU 11-15 and the score reflected the absence of runs.
TLU’s pitcher mixed up his pitches very well, trying to get batters off balanced, as well as being very consistent, said Trinity pitcher Colin Serkowski.
Defensively, pitching for the Tigers was not as effective as it usually is. The Tigers went through four pitchers throughout the nine inning game. Coach David Smith said that the pitchers “needed to do a better job at executing pitches,” in order for the team to get outs that they needed to stop TLU from scoring more. Read more »

The Tigers conceded their first goal of the match in the 35th minute as SAFC’s Michael Reed drove home Bobby Moseley’s well struck cross with a header into the back of Trinity's net.

Trinity Baseball Triumphed Hectic Week
By Trevor Griffin

The Trinity University Baseball Team finished one of the most intense and action packed weeks of the year just in time for the Spring Break.
The team played nine games in 10 days between March 4 and 14, amounting to 82 innings all together. The Tigers won seven of these nine games to stand at 17-4 at the end of the 10-day stretch.
The tournament started with the Tigers playing a three-game series at Texas Lutheran University on March 4. After winning two of the three games, the team returned home to prepare for their upcoming games.
However, a severe storm and rain caused a cancellation of a game scheduled for March 9. After waiting for two days for the rain to die down, Trinity proceeded to play five hard fought games in the following five days, against DeSales University of Pennsylvania, Denison University of Ohio and three games against Southwestern University of Texas. Trinity men's club Lacrosse continued their winning streak on Saturday with two home wins in a roll, defeating San Antonio College 14 to 1 and Texas A&M Corps of Cadets 13 to 1.
The team crushed both opponents on Saturday and it is clear that they are a big fish in a small pond. Their record now stands at 3 to 0.
“There are a lot of guys on the team who have played before, so we have a lot of developed talent that these other teams simply don’t have,” said senior Austin
