More than 300 Trinity students gathered at the Bell Center on Monday morning to march down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
The gathering started at 8:30. Upon arrival, each student received a grey shirt bearing a quote from Dr. King: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Trinity University President Danny Anderson led the pack. "The MLK march in San Antonio is a great show of community commitment on behalf of Trinity University,” he said.
A colorful array of signs and posters flooded the Intramural Field before the march began. Most signs showed quotes from Dr. King, such as, “Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
The march was approximately three miles on the historical east side of San Antonio. The city hosts one of the largest MLK marches in the nation, with approximately 100,000 participants annually.
Hanna Niner, a senior double majoring political science and sociology, said it was important to attend this event in order to “show solidarity for marginalized groups.” This year she felt the event was especially impactful due to the current political situation. “I think overall the march focused on having a positive tone about the problems our society is facing right now, especially with the upcoming inauguration,” she said.
Anti-Trump mantras were seen among the marching crowd, including the Trinity pack. But for Anderson, as well as many participants, the march always has its significance regardless of the context of the political situation.
