Trinity University men’s lacrosse team is both old and new.
It is old because it first started in 1988 when a bunch of “rag-tag” guys came together with a passion and dream of starting a lacrosse team. The boys wore jerseys and pads donated by the Trinity football team and they played their first scrimmage against the University of Texas.
In 1993, Trinity played the University of Texas in the first sanctioned United States intercollegiate lacrosse association game. The lacrosse team continued playing and growing until the spring of 2005, when it stopped playing and the team fell apart.
The current lacrosse team at Trinity, however, is barely 1 year old. The spark was kindled in June 2015, when Trinity student Ben Mulford had a vision to restart the team and the passion to make it great. Mulford double majors in Chinese and political science and just finished his third year at Trinity.
It was no accident that Mulford was the one to take on the cause of bringing back the lacrosse team. He started playing lacrosse at the age of 9, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and older brother. He said he loves the sport because it doesn’t matter your size or weight; what matters is your drive to get better. “When you worked at it you saw results directly,” he said.
Once he had the idea of building the team, Mulford got in touch with Caroline Keener, the head of club sports at Trinity. Keener was not only excited, but very supportive to get the lacrosse team back on Trinity’s campus. Next, Mulford reached out to Bob King, the athletic director, and Paul Cox, director of development, both of whom helped to develop the team.
After months of planning and organizing, a brand new men’s lacrosse team was up and running in August 2015.
Mulford recruited players from all over the places, from former football players to former swimmers, as well as guys who have never played a sport. “There is a huge range of guys of the team from freshman to seniors, all different sport backgrounds and skill level,” Mulford said.
The coaches of the team are Patrick Hughes, who works at Trinity’s athletic department, and Patrick Frietag, who graduated in May with a business degree.
Hughes grew up in San Antonio and attended UTSA where he played lacrosse and previously coached St. Anthony’s High School, which is right down the street from Trinity. Frietag grew up in Kansas City where he was a high school all-state midfielder lacrosse player.
Frietag played football for Trinity until his sophomore year, when he had to stop playing after multiple concussions. “I wish I could still play, but coaching is awesome and I love helping the guys out!” Frietag said. “I work with Ben a lot drawing up different plays and figuring which players would be best fit for certain roles.”

Mulford has served as the team’s captain, together with Stephan Chang, a sophomore and a computer science and physics double major, from Denver, Colorado. Defense captain is Sam Frietag, a junior majoring in business, and the younger brother of Patrick Frietag.
Having been in play for just one year, the lacrosse team already attracted a huge fan base. At the games, Trinity students filled the seats and made signs. They often go wild, yelling chants and decked out in Trinity spirit. The fans also fill multiple cars driving all over Texas to watch the team play. “They are the nicest boys on campus and are friends with everyone,” said one of the fans, Brianna Azua, a freshman English major.
“They are my best friends and the coolest guys on campus,” said another fan, Joanna Ahn, a senior English major.
Azua and Ahn have attended seven of the games. They tailgated, made signs and shirts, and were always loyal fans throughout the year. “I wanted to make lax signs to support the team and show my Trinity spirit!” Azua said excitedly. “I can’t wait for the next season. They win every game and are the best players in the league.”
The crowd is going to get larger as the team continues to grow and play more. In fact, this past year has seen the team winning more and more games. Mulford’s long term goal is to turn this club team into a varsity team, representing the university. “If you want something, if you want to get better at something, you just got to do it,” Mulford said. He is determined, as well as confident, to achieve the goal.
