Trinity students from all over campus were packed like sardines in the student section of Webster Gym at 4 p.m. on Saturday to watch the Trinity women’s basketball team play their rival, Texas Lutheran University (TLU). With a 19-1 record, the women looked calm and ready to play the only team to which they have lost this season.

“It’s funny,” said coach Cameron Hill ‘99, 40, about the packed stands. “Trinity students don’t typically come to our games, and we really appreciate having them.”

Hill also had some advice for the new fans. “When the other team’s at the foul line, they need to make noise. That’s how you participate as a fan. But I’m very satisfied with them showing up, so we’ll take baby steps. But next step, make noise.”

Hilary Hoffman, 22, a senior communication major, has come to every regular season home game to support the women’s team. She leads the student section in cheers throughout each game and dances to the music played during timeouts. “I’m just happy that we have the fans that come out and support the team.”

TLU led the game throughout the first quarter at 16-15, but Trinity bounced back, leading at the end of the second quarter 35-24. Allison Staley, 22, a senior sociology major, made an impressive three-pointer within the last few seconds of the first half.

Monica Holguin, 22, a senior business marketing major, sunk two three-pointers during the third quarter, which Trinity led 54-46. In the fourth quarter, TLU outscored Trinity 25-20, but Trinity eventually won the game 74-71.

Elizabeth Balido, 22, a senior history major, credited the fans for the victory. “People on the floor couldn’t have played the way they did without the hype from the bench,” she said. “I think today the whole team really stepped up and did what we needed to do to win.”

Jenna Smith Uzzell ’05, 34, and her husband, Matt Uzzell ‘01, 38, the offensive coordinator for Trinity's football team, brought a hoard of young fans armed with spirit signs to the game for their daughter's 8th birthday.

“Any chance to beat TLU is a good opportunity,” said Matt Uzzell.

Jenna Smith Uzzell played for Trinity’s national championship team in 2003. She and her husband come out to support the women’s team every chance they get.

“All the way to the end the girls fought so hard, and you could tell that they really wanted it, which is important,” said Smith Uzzell. She was impressed with the team’s progress throughout the season and saw similar growth to her national championship team.

“I have absolutely seen changes in the program,” said Smith Uzzell. “It’s hard to come back when the bar was set for a national championship. Coach Cam’s done a great job of bringing back a championship atmosphere to the Tiger program.”

The women’s team, now 20-1, plays again on Friday, Feb. 10, against Austin College in Sherman, Texas.
