SGA did not approve funding for the Henna Night, for now, but pushed forward the discussion of bringing Trinity branded scooters to campus.
At the SGA meeting on Wednesday, Muslim Student Association (MSA) presented proposal for funding for the annual Henna Night, featuring performances, traditional costumes fashion show, and free food.
Maggie Cheatham, senior Psychology and Art major, was a volunteer for last years fashion show. “Each piece in the show was more beautiful than the next. I had a wonderful opportunity to wear a hand sewn piece from Nigeria,” she said.
MSA requested $3405 for the event, including expenses for food, two professional henna artists, and costume rentals. While discussing the funding request, senators found themselves in need of more specific estimates.
For instance, cutlery and plates expenses were listed as $300, but senators asked to see more detailed break down of cost. “I’m on the Costco website right now, and 500 forks are $11.99,” said SGA judicial chair Julia Jameson.
SGA decided to table the proposal and discuss it at a later meeting when MSA can provide more details.
Another highlight of Wednesday's meeting was the discussion of possibly providing Trinity branded scooters on campus. This idea was discussed in past meetings but has since gained new momentum. Ty Tinker, SGA president, said that there has been conversations with the administration and TUPD regarding the possibility.
“I personally love Bird scooters, so Trinity branded scooters would be an awesome addition to the campus,” said SGA Senator Esther Omegba, freshman International Studies major. “They would be a convenient, fast, and fun way to get to class.”
She would like to see more scooters available on campus. “One issue I found with scooters on campus was that there were not enough of them so only a few students could ride them at a time," she said. "With these Trinity scooters there will be a large number of them so multiple people can use them at once.”
Some senators raised the question about SGA’s liabilities for potential injuries caused by the scooters if SGA decided to sponsor them. Tinker reassured them that liability would not be on SGA, adding “we could then put out safety video, pamphlets, or other information to show students how to safely ride them.”
Senators agreed to discuss this matter further in the future.
On Wednesday, SGA also voted to partially fund the Trinity Recognition of International Engagement stoles, which recognize international students and students who studied abroad at graduation. The stole has Trinity University's seal on one side and the country’s flag of student's choice on the other side.
The SGA funding calendar is coming to an end, with Senate funding meetings now concluded. The Finance Committee will meet one more time on April 4th.
