Leigh Anne Tuohy, the lead character played by Sandra Bullock in the movie “The Blind Side,” was the featured speaker yesterday at the ninth annual Mums and Mimosas luncheon.

Around 600 guests gathered in the Witte Museum to hear Tuohy’s speech while celebrating the work done by Good Samaritan Community Services.

Tuohy, who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, spoke about miracles and how it just takes one act of kindness to change someone’s life. Michael Oher, her son, “was deemed 100% valueless by society,” she said. When she turned the car around to talk to Michael for the first time, she decided she wanted to take him shopping.
However, when she went to find him at the school, no one knew who he was. The principal even said that Michael was not going to make it to graduation. They simply did not value his life, Tuohy said.

“We look at people and size them up. We are all guilty of it. You look at them and say ‘they smell bad, they need a new shirt,’ that is what people said about Michael,” Tuohy added. “All people have value.”

Tuohy went on to say that people size others up, but the truth is that “families don’t have to match, just have to love each other, value one another.” She spoke about the importance of loving people unconditionally even if they are not your own.

Simon Salas, the CEO of Good Samaritan Community Services, said Tuohy “touched many in the audience.” He said Tuohy’s passion connected well with his organization’s mission of providing community services to overcome poverty.

Mums and Mimosas event
Established in 2009, Mums & Mimosas celebrates motherhood and friendship. It also raises awareness of programs that “address the needs of women and children who come to Good Samaritan Community Services (GSCS) in pursuit of a life beyond the boundaries of poverty,” said Kathleen Dove, head of special events at GSCS.

The theme color for this year’s event was pink and mimosas were served. There were raffle tickets for $20 each or six tickets for $100. The proceeds collected are unrestricted revenue, meaning those funds can be used to support expenses on GSCS's budget that foundations won't.
