Amulya Deva assumed the role of the president of Student Government Association (SGA) in January. During her one-year term, she plans to address both old and new agendas.

Deva, a junior majoring in finance and business analytics & technology with a minor in economics, is not a total new comer to SGA. Last year, she served as a SGA senator. She decided to run for the president because “I’ve learned that the best way to affect change on campus involves work over the course of multiple terms.”

In fact, one of such changes that Deva is pushing for, the Menstrual Product Initiative, was originated by her predecessor, Nick Santulli. Deva and her administration will continue to work toward increasing the number of tampon and sanitary napkin receptacles in buildings across campus, such as CSI and the library.

In addition, through the work of Open Educational Resources Committee, Deva hopes to encourage more professors to use free, credible OER textbooks to reduce costs for students.

“I’m a big believer that progress takes time,” she says. “Because of that, there are many initiatives that prior SGA presidents have started that I’d like to focus on developing.”

Being the SGA president, Deva sees her role as the link between the administration and the students. “I wanted to help facilitate open lines of communication between the student body and the Trinity administration so we as students can express our concerns and ideas for change,” she says.

And so she plans to do. Deva says her goal is to represent the interests and opinions of the students, administration, and faculty while upholding The Student Rights and Responsibilities, SGA Constitution, and SGA Bylaws. She also assigns students to various university committees. “We as students have a voice in what the administration does by serving on committees,” she says.

To achieve these goals, Deva says she plans to meet with SGA committee chairs to set S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timebound) goals for them. She wants the committees to be more effective and productive.

“I am confident that Amulya is more than capable of responsibly leading with integrity and will achieve every goal she has of improving Trinity's campus and representing our students with the help of the senators, Cabinet, Judicial Chair and our advisors,” says Rachel Daniel, the vice president of SGA.

Aside from her new role, Deva is highly involved on campus. She is the vice president of the professional activities of Delta Sigma Pi, finance chair of TigerThon, a member of Sigma Theta Tau, and involved in Momentum.
