Student Government Association held its regular meeting last night at the Coates University Center, where the student government body heard funding proposals from various campus organization.

Among the proposals, The Trinitonian, the campus newspaper, asked for more funding to advance the publication’s digital production.

Daniel Conrad, a junior and the chief editor of the newspaper, told the SGA the newspaper’s goals of becoming more digital and having a stronger online presence.

The Trinitonian values good and trusted journalism. The ability to share straight forward news with more students who, on a daily basis, are being exposed to other questionable news sources is the main goal of The Trinitonian and it becoming more digital,” Conrad said.

The Trinitonian needs funding from SGA in order to create a more updated website for the newspaper and, if approved for funding, hope to launch the new website by January of next year. This new website is seen as an opportunity to enhance the campus newspaper experience and also positively impact other student organizations on campus by allowing them to advertise more effectively via the online platform.

The “digital first” strategy that The Trinitonian is following aims at engaging the Trinity student body more effectively. The funding can also allow student reporters to cover events off campus and even outside San Antonio, so the newspaper has more exciting stories.

The Trinitonian and its staff will not know if their funding proposal has been approved until a couple weeks from now.

Student organizations here on campus depend almost solely upon one thing: school funding. The first step to receiving funding is SGA's approval.

“This meeting is one of the more important SGA meetings during the spring semester,” said junior and SGA Chief of Staff Maria Protic. “The representatives from each organization are given approximately seven minutes to give their proposal and the rest of the time is dedicated to any questions the SGA members might have.”

The SGA members will then carefully examine the proposals and deciding “what they believe to be the impact the group brings to the school as a whole and then we go from there,” said Protic.
