Camryn Thompson: Unrelenting Passion for Dancing

By Makenna Bentley

Picture this. Lights in the Laurie Auditorium begin to dim. A group of dancers run on stage in black baseball jerseys, and hip hop begins to play. A sudden rush of excitement erupted as the crowd begins to cheer, and the dance begins: sharp clean hits followed by rolling moves. That's right, you are watching Trinity University's only hip hop dance crew, Loon-E.

Camryn Thompson, a junior Political Science major, would be among the dancers. She has been dancing with Loon-E for two years now and participated in many performances including Black History Showcase and Tigerthon.

Thompson first started dancing when she was 2 years old. Her parents enrolled her in dance classes and piano, but dancing eventually won her passion. Starting in the basics like tap, ballet, and jazz, later competing on her high school cheer team, Thompson now decided to focus on hip hop, and Loon-E was a perfect fit.

Founded in 2008, Loon-E performs approximately 10 times a year, including dancing at various Trinity events. But Thompson’s favorite show is the Loon-E show, when they get to dance the entire show and all numbers are choreographed by themselves. “It is great to have people watch what we have worked so hard on, and it's just really satisfying for people to like what we have created,” says Thompson.

She did not just dance the moves, but created many of them, as she is also a choreographer for the group. “Every single aspect of choreography is hard,” Thompson said. “As a choreographer you want to have cool choreo, but you have to tell yourself it’s okay [if] it’s not perfect.”

Madison Nix, junior Political Science major, is Thompson’s roommate. She has gone to many of Thompson’s performances and loves supporting her. “It's always fun seeing her perform, watching her do what she loves,” Nix said. “It’s fun for me because I get to see such a different side of her. I remember the first time I watched her, I was totally blown away by how incredibly talented she is.”

Triniti Lemmons, sophomore Math Finance major, loves watching her friend dance as well. “Camryn is a really good dancer, and sometimes she makes me want to improve my skills,” she says. “I just get really hype watching her.”

For Thompson and her fellow crew, their passions for dance also helps them escape from stress. “Sometimes you just need a place to go and relieve some stress. A lot of people in Loon-E including myself like using dance as their outlet.”

Thompson plans to keep dancing for Loon-E till she graduates. After that, she will continue to pursuit her passion for dancing through taking dance classes from choreographers she loves. “There are a lot of classes in places like Houston, Dallas, and LA that I would love to go to,” she says.

Loon-E will perform next in the Momentum show on May 3rd and 4th.
