Emily Daum has had a successful career not only as a student athlete for Trinity University, but also as the head coach of men's and women's cross country teams.
Daum started her running career when she was in high school. At Trinity, she continued to shine as a cross country runner. She made it to the Nationals as a freshman in the steeplechase, and became an All-American during her undergraduate years at Trinity.
She had planned to major in computer science, but her love for running grew bigger than she expected. She knew she wanted more from it. "I knew I had loved to run when I was in high school and my hope was that it would grow even more throughout college," says Daum.
After graduating from Trinity in 2009, she decided to pursue a coaching career. Starting with an internship with the NCAA, which really groomed her, she eventually came back to Trinity to take the assistant coach position in fall 2012.
Two years later, she was promoted to the head coach of the cross country teams, just five years after graduating as a student athlete. She is grateful for such opportunities Trinity has offered. “I love that I get to work a dream job with my dream school,” she says.
Three seasons into being the head coach, Daum has led the cross country teams to many notable accomplishments. In 2016, the Tiger women's team placed fifth at the Regional, and both men and women finished second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Trinity's men also won the 2015 SCAC Championship, and the women were runners-up.
Daum also serves as the assistant coach for distance runners on Trinity's track team. With her coaching, sophomore Harry Bellow won the gold medal of men's 800 meter race in last years conference meet. He is currently ranked NO.1 in the 1500 meter and 5000 meter races in SCAC.
Daum "has such a strong enthusiasm that really brings the team together and helps us remain focused on our goals. She is extremely supportive and gives great workouts for us to improve,” says Bellow.
This weekend, Trinity will host the SCAC track & field championships. “Surely eyes will be opened once we hit conference time,” says Daum, and she and her team are ready.
