Maximillian Armitage: An Aspiring Artist

By Erin Crooks

Looking for a new artist to add to your playlist on Spotify? Well, a fellow Trinity student might just be your guy. Maximillian Armitage, a freshman and going by the stage name of “maxgotthetracks,” is an up and coming artist. In just 3 years, he has managed to self produce numerous tracks and create a presence on SoundCloud and Spotify.

When he was 16, Armitage, a Houston native, began watching Battle Rap videos on YouTube. Inspired by freestyle videos, he began to rap over available tracks.

Wanting to take his creation to the next level, he sought help from a friend skilled in producing music and bought himself a MacBook Air to start editing his own content. He has spent over $1000 in equipment and software, purchasing headphones, speakers, a condenser microphone and the production software Logic.

Inspired by YouTube beats, Armitage has begun to produce his own beats with friends' help. He started his music career making more “aggressive” trap music, but has since converted to a more “relaxed” style of hip hop and rap.

He writes his own lyrics and collaborates with others to mix the song and upload it to SoundCloud and Spotify. “Collaborating with him is an eye opening experience because he is able to make lyrics that mirrors his feelings and experiences,” says his producer, Taku.

Armitage derives his creativity from rappers such as Tyler the Creator, Chance the Rapper, and Joey Bada$$. “I really like music that makes me feel powerful. So I want to create that type of music,” he says.

Though not associated with a record label, Armitage is content on his own. “I like being an independent artist, so that way I can move how I’d like to,” he says. Now that he is publishing his music on Spotify, he is able to make his content more accessible and to continue building his own brand as an artist. He even started to make some money from his tracks.

Besides studio recording, "maxgotthetracks” also does live performances. He has competed in a number of Trinity sponsored events, such as Spotlight, and has performed for organizations such as Black Student Union. Having done a few open mic nights, Armitage is hoping to delve into more live performances in Houston, his hometown.

His family and friends support his music pursuit. He also joined an online community, where he and other artists share each other’s work.

Through his work, Armitage simply aspires to make others happy. Going forward, he wants others to pursue their dreams and hopes that his content can make people feel good. “My goal is just to spread good energy, good vibes to people," he says. "And inspire other people to find themselves through my music.”
